Embracer's Legacy: 44 Axed Studios, 80 Axed Games, 4,532 Axed Jobs (The Jimquisition)
Embracer Group ate its fill and then threw up. After buying a ridiculous amount of companies, the resulting studios closures and layoffs have left an indelible scar on the game industry. The harm will be felt for decades.

We can get as mad as we want, & we should, but it needs to be explicitly said that this is capitalism working exactly as intended. Embracer are an inevitable outcome of this economic system.

The idiocy of Capitalism never stops. Pre-name change, THQ Nordic was doing quite well. It was sustainable. But of course sustainable is not acceptable under Capitalism. You gotta use up everything, burn through all resources, in order to have "infinite growth" and to have it as quickly and extremely as possible. Of course, it isn't possible. Growth must be finite. Under some sort of sane system, the goal would be to reach an equilibrium, to exist in balance and sustainability.

I have to disagree with one of Steph's takes. Corporate execs absolutely understand consequences. They simply do not care what the consequences *are* - they will never have to reckon with anything that happens to their companies or employees, so consequences do not matter to them. It's less ignorance and more actual malevolence.

I worked for Embracer for 2 years - at Asmodee (their Board Game subsidiary group....thing) and it was just...there were so many baffling decisions coming down from the corporate and Embracer side of things, and we were under constant fear of layoffs. It was massively stressful and mismanaged as fuck.

Its crazy how people still complain about fromsoft fans as if easy mode demanders aren't the ones who are constantly bringing up the topic. Literally zero people have ever actually made the point that dark souls players are better than other people, its just non fans being really insecure about it. I mean here you are screeching like a lunatic about how this supposedly awful fanbase puts people off of the series, meanwhile Elden Ring is literally their most successful game to date. Like it's crazy how much insecurity and projection is on display here

I was so hopeful we'd finally get the 3rd and last prequal to Deus Ex before a glorious HD remake to make a generation weep in joy..but no. Embracer shot the golden goose. They shot that sweet innocent hope in the face. Clubbed it to death like a baby seal, and then went off to wipe out the polar bears. I hope these ceos never have a nice poo again. I hope their money never buys them the comfort of a healthy bowl. Let their money hang around them like maggots in a corpse.

The buy-up and termination of development studious is the point. Publishers are quite literally trying to reduce and eliminate the number of developers out there. The fewer developers there are, the more publishers can force control of the industry... up to, and including, massive increases in the price of games.

Every journalism outlet that covers these games or interviews these corporations about a "success" without saying straight-up that these layoffs are a sign of abject failure every single time they open their damn mouths about "record growth" is complicit. Fudging the numbers to get success means that your original metrics showed failure, and figureheads shouldn't get to hide behind the numbers they made up just because their company shat out some AAA grindmill that made you feel nice. If you ain't saying shit like "Embracer Group _alleges_ record profits despite billion dollar debt and thousands of employee layoffs" then you are telling the emperor his new clothes are wonderful. Fact-check these fuckers until they're red in the face from embarrassment, because they sure as hell ain't gonna be red from shame.
